Even Rock-n-Rollers need some quiet from time to time. Nothing like a white sand beach and soft warm trade winds to get it done.

Nothing like a white sand beach and soft warm trade winds to get it done. Shakira the Colombian singing sensation who is dating Barcelona soccer star Gerard Pique has partnered with the Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame to purchase a $16 million site called Bonds Cay, just north of the Bahamas and build a posh luxury resort which will cater for the worlds wealthy.

Shakira and Waters are reportedly hoping to “reinvent the concept of tourism” by building both a small group of luxury vacation homes, private beaches and hotels with plans to sell prime ocean front real estate on this sexy little Cay.

Bonds Cay has 5 beaches and 3 bays, and a number of waterfalls. Waters and Shakira are also making plans to build an artists’ retreat which will house a series of artists-in-residence and galleries walled with new creative works from up and coming artists. It’s a concept more related to art and culture the boats and golf.”

According to John Christie of Caribbean real estate brokerage H.G. Christie said: “It’s a beautiful island with some height to it, which means as you build up, you get better views. There is the ocean to the east of it so you’ve got reefs and views of turquoise water”.

If it’s as cool as Pink Floyd music and as sexy as Shakira, it’s a resort and real estate venture that will work even in this market.

The Association of British Travel Agents revealed 20 of the most ridiculous complaints...

A survey from Thomas Cook and the Association of British Travel Agents revealed 20 of the most ridiculous complaints by vacationers made to their travel agents.

1. “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time — this should be banned.”

2. “We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our swim suits and towels.”

3. “Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women.”

4. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”

5. A tourist at a top African Game Lodge overlooking a water hole, who spotted a visibly aroused elephant, complained that the sight of this rampant beast ruined his honeymoon by making him feel “inadequate.”

6. A woman threatened to call police after claiming that she’d been locked in her hotel room by staff. In fact, she had mistaken the “do not disturb” sign on the back of the door as a warning to remain in the room.

7. “The beach was too sandy.”

8. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food at all.”

9. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as yellow but it was white.”

10. A guest at a Novotel in Australia complained his soup was too thick and strong. He was inadvertently slurping the gravy at the time.

11. “We bought ‘Ray-Ban’ sunglasses for five euros from a street trader, only to find out they were fake, that is not acceptable.”

12. “No one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled.”

13. “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England, it only took the Americans three hours to get home?”

14. “I compared the size of our one-bedroom apartment to our friends’ three-bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller.”

15. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the accommodation.’ We’re trainee hairdressers — will we be OK staying there?”

16. “There are too many Spanish people. The receptionist speaks Spanish. The food is Spanish. Too many foreigners now live abroad.”

17. “We had to walk outside with no air conditioning.”

18. “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel?”

19. “I was bitten by mosquito’s, no-one said they would bite.”

20. “My fiancé and I booked a twin-bedded room but we were placed in a double-bedded room. We now hold you responsible for the fact that I find myself pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

Space Expedition Curacao (SXC) has signed up 35 spaceflight participants so far this year...

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados Space Expedition Curacao (SXC) has signed up 35 spaceflight participants so far this year, and chief executive officer of joint venture partner XCOR Aerospace said on Monday that the finalization of a new “multi-million dollar” deal will allow them to proceed “full pace” on lifting off in 2014.

SXC was founded in 2008 to offer suborbital space tourism flights and scientific research missions from the Caribbean island of Curacao in the next two years. The Space Expedition Curacao intends to lead the world in providing commercial space launch facilities and suborbital flight services from its Space Port Curacao, said its goal was to sell 50 spaceflights before the holiday season.

“A number of celebrities and notables have already signed up for this amazing experience, including Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes , World Series Champion San Francisco Giants batting coach and Curacao native Hensley Meulens, and celebrity DJ Armin van Buuren, host of the weekly radio show ‘A State of Trance,’ which attracts a reported 30 million listeners in 40 countries. It’s not hard to get people excited about what will be a life changing event,” said SXC co-founder Michiel Mol.

Through the new multi-million dollar transaction, SXC has secured the wet lease of production Lynx tail number two for operation on Curacao, pending export licensing action. Mol said: “The Lynx is unique in that it provides a one-on-one ‘co-pilot’ experience with an amazing panoramic view of the Earth and sky through large cockpit windows. It will be an unforgettable and very personalized experience for everyone who takes the trip.”

SXC also has a number of business channel partners lined up including KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. KLM will purchase flights to offer as frequent flyer rewards, support educational initiatives in the Netherlands through the use of flights for scientific discovery by students, and include flights as part of vacation packages to Curacao, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“We’ve been working hard on the infrastructure end of things as well,” commented Ben Droste, president and co-founder of SXC. “Our relationship with Curacao Airport Holdings continues to be strong as they ready the facilities necessary to make this vision a reality. Things are now moving at an accelerated pace.”

Look out George Jetson…here we come!

Abercrombie & Kent will launch its Cuba program this fall. The tour operator partnered with the Foundation for Caribbean Studies, a licensed nonprofit organization, to offer six Cuba trips this year.

Under a policy change issued by the Obama administration, U.S. groups can travel to Cuba as long as they meet with local Cubans in the “people-to-people” category of educational and cultural travel. In June, Insight Cuba was the first operator to announce people-to-people itineraries for Cuba.

A&K, based in the U.K., has operated in Cuba for five years with custom and group tours for non-Americans. Its new series of Cuba programs, now available to U.S. travelers through its partnership with the Foundation for Caribbean Studies, are escorted motor coach programs headed by a local in-country host/guide.

The 11-day inaugural trip departs Sept. 30, followed by departures Oct. 14 and 17; Nov. 23; and Dec. 12 and 22. Departures in 2012 “could at least double this year’s number, based on early forecasts,” according to Scott Wiseman, A&K’s president in the U.S.

“Guests on our programs will discover Cuba at its most intimate and authentic, and in complete comfort. Each tour is limited to 24 participants and includes contact with Cuban people in all walks of life, from artists and architects to musicians and farmers,” Wiseman said.

Priced from $4,325 per person, double, the itineraries will visit Havana, the town of Trinidad, the cultural city of Matanzas, the Cuban countryside, historic sites, sugar mills, a cigar factory and a rum plantation as well as special sites open only to A&K participants.

The price does not include a charter flight from Miami, priced at $449, as well as a $200 fee to the foundation and $55 in visa costs.

Tour participants fly into Cienfuegos near Trinidad on Cuba’s south coast, spend three nights at the Iberostar Gran Hotel Trinidad and explore the area before moving on to the Hotel Nacional in Havana for seven nights.

The tour price includes an expedited immigration process upon arrival; meals; accommodations; and air-conditioned motorcoach transport throughout Cuba.

Our best of paradise usually has to do with things such as best beach bars in the Caribbean, places to buy a second home or best spas in paradise. But we are introducing a new angle or category – a individual who does or performs something extraordinary or out of the ordinary, in of course, paradise. We feel this next one definitely qualifies as a “best of paradise”.

Most surfers are happy with a good wave that carries them for 50 yards and 10-15 seconds. Not Gary Saavedra. He has now joined other in the Guinness Book of World Records for surfing for over 3 hours, on one wave! . The surfer from Panama surfed for three hours and 55 minutes in 41 mile wave created by a large boat. Saavedra is the first person the Panama Canal Authority has ever permitted surfing access to the canal, and then only on the day of the race.

A 13-time surfing champion from Panama Saavedra had been training hard for the “Red Bull Canal Cross” challenge. In really tough weather the surfer had to battle 20+knot winds and large vessels that were making the water conditions unstable for riding the artificial wave. During his ride Saavedra almost fell numerous times, but that seems acceptable during a three-hour wave! Surfing a static wave is not easy and can be very exhausting, at best. The previous world record was held by Steve King, from the UK, who surfed this type of wave for 66 minutes.

Since it is about 50 miles long, the Panama Canal, where more than 14,000 vessels cross every year, offered the perfect racing conditions for maximizing a long-distance surf behind a wake-boarding boat. Or not. The chop from other boats across the canal made for a bumpy ride and nearly knocked Saavedra off his board during the critical first hour and 6 minutes — the previous record-holding time.

“After the third hour, my body was very tired,” Saavedra told reporters. “I almost fell eight times. In the first hour, I worked very hard and used all my energy. The weather was harsh … I had never trained in such conditions.” Sounds like Saaverda went above and beyond the call of duty and a deserving entry into the Guinness Book of World Records and our Best of Paradise.

In a development that will nearly double its inventory of luxury villas, the prestigious Viceroy Bali has announced the completion of a clutch of new villas by July, 2011. Bali is one of the true exotic destinations in the world. The lauded highland property located near the artist village of Ubud has also signed off on the design of its tennis facility and valley-side yoga pavilion set to open in November, 2011.

“The new villas represent a fairly significant new direction with clean lines and a vibrant design that is simple and elegant, each with a commodious space that includes a living room with sectional sofa, oversized king bed, espresso machine, 47-inch TV, iPod docking station and of course each with a private pool and outdoor sheltered pavilion, all providing luxury living in paradise,” said General Manager Anthony Syrowarka. “And perhaps equally exciting is the upcoming launch of our tennis and yoga centers, both carefully designed amongst an exotic tropical backdrop.”

To ensure that equally impressive service meets its high standards in accommodation, newly appointed Guest Service Manager, Jonathan Sweeney-Lowe will give burnish to the guest experience. “We noticed the small luxury category on Bali often goes without a concierge or guest service manager, duties merely lumped into those of a general manager,” said Sweeney-Lowe. “As the bar is raised quite high here at the Viceroy, what with an on-site helipad and one of the top dining venues on the island, this new position provides a level of service that is as luxurious as the accommodation itself.”

Like its Lembah spa and Cascades restaurant, each villa faces a primary palm forest with untamed views and sights and sounds of tropical flora and fauna. In contrast, the busy village of Ubud with its welter of galleries and bric-a-brac shops and free-spirited air is only minutes away.

The Viceroy Bali is an ultra-luxury all-villa resort majestically situated on a secluded ridge of the Petanu River gorge along Bali’s “Valley of the Kings,” an appellation given by locals for the generations of Balinese royalty who have resided in nearby villages. With its proximity to royalty, the serene tropical valley located near the popular village of Ubud, provided the Australian owning family with an apt brand. The resort is regarded by sophisticated international travelers as one of the world’s most respected tropical hideaways with beautiful valley views, impeccable service and standards and peerless facilities including the feted restaurant and bar, Cascades and opulent spa and beauty center, Lembah. To complement its 25-luxury pool villas, restaurant, spa and gym and onsite helipad, a tennis facility and a yoga pavilion are currently under construction and due for completion in 2011. The Viceroy Bali is a member of Small Luxury Hotels (SLH) www.viceroybali.com

From Towering Volcanoes and Rainforests to Beautiful Beaches.

It’s hard to find a place to start when talking about adventures and the most amazing spot in Central America. Luxury Living’s “Best of Paradise” series heads to that less traveled part of the Americas between Mexico and Columbia.

For starters, try climbing lava spuing volcanoes, with perfect cones piercing the cloud line above. Endless adventures include jungle walks that wind past Mayan pyramids near the worlds only Jaguar preserve. Wildlife abounds with spider and howler monkeys, sloths, quetzals and birds taken from Fruit Loop boxes. Cool surfing towns line the Pacific shoreline, where waves rush gold-sand beaches. Diving and fishing here is some of the best in the world, from Blue Holes to the world’s second largest coral reef.

Beyond the beaches, there are hidden Maya, Kuna and Miskito villages, haciendas turned language schools and the cobbled streets of beautiful Spanish-colonial towns, where vendors push squeaky carts of fresh corn or shaved ice. Central America offers the best of paradise for those who like a road less traveled.

Tikal, Guatemala
It’s no coincidence that Francis Ford Coppola built his third resort and jungle lodge here. It is one of the most amazing sites in the world, outside the great pyramids of Egypt. Certainly the most striking feature of Tikal is its steep stone temples, rising to heights of more than 120ft. But Tikal is different from Copán, Chichén Itzá or most other great Mayan sites, because it is deep in the jungle. As you hike towards the towering temples and turn the corner to see the first pyramid, it’s so surreal that these temples, former gifts to the gods, play tricks on your eyes. Its many plazas have been cleared of trees and vines, its temples are uncovered and partially restored, but as you walk from one building to another you pass beneath the dense rainforest canopy. Rich, loamy aromas of earth and vegetation, a peaceful air and animal noises contribute to an experience not offered by other Mayan sites.

Belize’s Coral Reef
From this comparatively pristine vantage point, it’s easy to see why naturalist Charles Darwin declared this necklace of mangroves, seagrass and submerged coral, stretching more than 150 miles off the Belize coast, “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies.”

With over 200 individual Cayes (small islands) a few days of sailing around each mini paradise is like nothing else in the Western Hemisphere. Belize also has one of the most diverse reef ecosystems in the world, the Barrier Reef itself which grows along the edge of the continental shelf, separated from the mainland by the lagoon; and three offshore atolls (Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Atoll and Glovers Reef). The presence of atolls is unusual, as a matter of fact only two others exist, in the world. And of course, these tiny jewels and amazingly clear water make for some of the best scuba diving on the planet.

Lake Atitlán and Antigua, Guatemala
Nineteenth-century traveler and chronicler John L Stephens, writing in Incidents of Travel in Central America, called Lago de Atitlán “the most magnificent spectacle we ever saw”, and he had been to and seen a lot.. Today even seasoned travelers, some call it the Lake Tahoe of Central America, marvel at the lake’s rippling expanse and the villages that tumble down from green hills to its shores. Fishermen in rustic crafts ply the lake’s aquamarine surface, while indigenous women in multi-colored outfits do their washing by the banks where trees burst into bloom. Fertile hills dot the landscape, and over everything loom the volcanoes, permeating the entire area with a mysterious beauty.

Antigua Guatemala, may be the most outstanding and best-preserved colonial city in Spanish America. Tourists visit Antigua Guatemala every year from around the world to enjoy its natural beauty and historic monuments. The Spanish Colonial style is evident in every part of the town: its houses, churches, squares, parks and ruins, also in its traditions and folklore as well. Antigua is a city of charm and color where you can see and buy an overwhelming variety of attractive, handmade products that honor the traditions of generations of artisans. It happens to be one of the favorite stops in Central America for heads of state including Bill Clinton.

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
This national park on Costa Rica’s south coast looks just like a picture postcard. Every color is cranked up to full saturation, from the stingingly aqua colored water to the lime-green forest, with perfect strips of pale sand stretching between. Manuel Antonio has four beaches in total: Playita, Espadilla, Manuel Antonio, and Escondido. Take a hike along the narrow, sandy bridge to Punta Cathedral for unforgettable Pacific views.

Stroll down one of the park’s several walking trails, and you might spy coatimundis, ocelots, sloths, monkeys (possibly even the endangered squirrel monkey), caiman, anteaters, along with birds of every shape and color imaginable. The offshore coral reefs bustle with marine life, including dolphins and whales—book a day trip out to Caño Island for some prime scuba diving. Manuel Antonio is so pristine, you’d think it was entirely removed from society all together.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
This little jewel on the Pacific Coast and only 20 minutes from the Costa Rican border, San Juan del Sur is a quaint surfing town and fishing village that shouldn’t be missed. Nicaragua is becoming a world-renowned surf destination and San Juan del Sur has become its hotspot with much smaller crowds as compared to Costa Rica and Mexico. It’s among Nicaragua’s best and most accessible beaches, it offers the same white-sand, excellent surfing and sunny, dry resort weather as Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, an hour south, where folks like Madonna shack up at the Four Seasons. In San Juan del Sur, be sure to have a drink at the Pelican Eyes Resort perched on the side of a hill with amazing views of town and the Pacific. Oh, and make sure you go at sunset.

With an average of 300+ days per year of offshore winds attributed to the proximity of Lake Nicaragua, day trips to volcanoes, cigar plantations and one of the oldest cities in the Americas, Granada, a charming colonial town, makes this entire area an easy pick among our “Best of Paradise”.

Stann Creek District and Hummingbird Highway, Belize
Passing through jungle and citrus orchards as it skirts the northern edges of the Maya Mountain range, Belize’s Hummingbird Highway offers a near constant procession of postcard-perfect vistas. At times you’ll feel like you’re headed to Jurassic Park. There are also plenty of reasons to stop along the way, chief among these being a visit to Cave’s Branch for cave tubing and St Herman’s Cave, where, with a guide, you can explore its huge caverns and classic Maya ceremonial chambers containing calcified skeletons and artifacts. There is also the Blue Hole, a 25-foot-deep sapphire-blue swimming hole inside a 328-foot-wide cenote that was formed when the roof caved in on one of the Sibun River’s underground tributaries.

Just 30 minutes from the end of the Hummingbird Highway you’ll find the very cool village of Placencia to the south. It’s well worth the drive. Not only does it play host to the best beach in Belize and Francis Ford Coppola’s famed Turtle Inn, but also it has some great shops and galleries along the world’s smallest main street, according to the Guinness Book of World records.

Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua
Isla de Ometepe’s twin volcanic peaks, rising up out of Lago de Nicaragua, have captured the imagination of everyone from pre-colonial Aztec descendents (who thought they had found the Promised Land) to Mark Twain (who waxed lyrical about it in his book Travels with Mr. Brown) to the surprisingly few travelers who make it out here. The island’s fertile volcanic soil, clean waters, wide beaches, wildlife population, archaeological sites and dramatic profile landed it on the 2006 shortlist for the new Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Bay Islands, Honduras
Honduras’s Bay Islands move to a lyrical reggae beat and offer some of the best diving and snorkeling in Central America. Perched on the southern terminus of the Mesoamerican Reef – the second largest barrier reef in the world – this is a water-lover’s dream, with amazing reef systems and enough marine life to keep divers and snorkelers busy for days on end. Backpackers and beach bums will love the vibe, the sand streets and cheap accommodations of Utila, while mainstream Roatán – the most visited of the islands – appeals to an older crowd, families and folks looking for a bit more on the creature-comfort scale.

Arenal Route, Costa Rica
If you have a little time, take the road from Ciudad Quesada to the Arenal area – you are in for one beautiful ride. With the backdrop of Volcán Platanar behind you, the road winding through this green, river-rich agrarian region passes through prosperous, quaint towns bright with bougainvillea. In front of you, if the weather cooperates, the smoking peak of Arenal will loom in the distance. On either side of the road, up the green slope and down on the lake side, turnouts and driveways for lovely inns, kooky ersatz Austrian mini-villages, hip coffee houses and eccentric galleries appear invitingly like pictures in a pop-up book. Heading back around the western edge of the lake, you will pass through the lakeside Nuevo Arenal and down to the pleasant mountain town of Tilarán before descending back toward the Interamericana. Don’t miss some of the many unique spa experiences in the area, too.

Panama City, Panama
The most cosmopolitan capital in Central America, Panama City is both a gateway to the country’s natural riches and a vibrant destination in, its own right. A hub of international banking and trade, Panama City sports a sultry skyline of shimmering glass and steel towers reminiscent of Miami. And of course we all know about the canal and its history so you have to go watch the huge ships seemingly walk across the land.

The colonial neighborhood of Casco Viejo is a dilapidated peninsula with ruins and cobbled streets reminiscent of old Havana. After the city elite fled to live in skyscrapers, decades passed with Casco Viejo crumbling on the edge of the sea. Recently, artists and small businesses are moving back in and renovations are abundant. With luxury lofts, cafes and the hottest nightspots Casco is making a run for ‘the’ sexiest part of Panama City.

Jimmy Buffett, the famous musician, loves the Caribbean lifestyle like no one else. He owns a home in St. Barts and frequently mentions the sunny oasis in his island escapism songs. One such songs was mythically inspired by an American food classic, the Cheeseburger.

According to Buffett’s Margaritaville web site, the myth of the “cheeseburger in paradise” was inspired by a boat journey Buffett once took in the Caribbean. Buffett states that while subsisting on canned food and peanut butter, he envisioned eating a “piping hot cheeseburger”. He reports that upon finally arriving in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, he was surprised to find a restaurant serving American cheeseburgers:

…we gave particular instructions to the waiter on how we wanted them cooked and what we wanted on them — to which little attention was paid. It didn’t matter. The overdone burgers on the burned, toasted buns tasted like manna from heaven, for they were the realization of my fantasy burgers on the trip.

Luxury Living International Magazine set out to find song-worthy cheeseburgers in paradise and here’s what we found:

Rumfish – Belize

In the tiny fishing village of Placencia Belize (best mainland beaches too) is a great hangout with killer food and the burgers are awesome. This upstairs bar and grill has all kinds of great fresh food but the burgers are really good with just enough heat to make you drink your cold Beliken Beer a little faster.

Perched above the village and over looking the soccer field RumFish is a great hang out for cocktails, too. The Owners John and Pam, from Santa Barbara are usually hanging around manning the bar and swapping stories with customers- which is a great way to hang-out in paradise.

Cool Cat Cafe – Maui

First Cool cat start with 100% certified Angus Beef, always fresh never frozen. Next, they hand patty our 6.5oz. burgers everyday. Each Cool Cat burger is then topped with their own blend of spices and cooked to order.

Great buns are a must for a great burger and theirs are baked fresh daily from a local bakery and delivered every morning.

Together all these ingredients, along with the great atmosphere, is what makes a Cool Cat Burger so fantastic. And they’ve been voted best burger on Maui for 5 years in a row!

The Beach Bar – St Maarten

To many people across the world, Sunset Bar & Grill is known as The Beach Bar; a unique watering hole on the tropical paradise island of St. Maarten. Overlooking one of the Caribbean’s most fascinating beaches, right at the beginning of the runway of the famous PJIA airport, Sunset Bar & Grill epitomizes St. Maarten’s relaxed lifestyle. Soak up some sun and chow down on their popular Cheeseburger or go exotic and try the Swordfish burger!

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy top quality live music at the Sunset Bar & Grill. You’ll witness a formidable mix of characters from all walks of life sharing the same passion for great music, from Latin and soul to rock and reggae.

Johnny Rockets – Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island

In the famed Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, next to Nassau in the Bahamas, you’ll find a retro Americana dining experience at Johnny Rockets.
The burger comes accompanied with fries, of course and to add to the nostalgic feel of the place, table-top jukebokes will serenade you while you chow down – and each song is just a nickel. When you’re satisfied with your meal, head just outside to the luxurious Atlantis Resort where you can swim with dolphins, hit the Ocean Club Golf Course or visit the Mandara Spa for a truly relaxing evening.

If a relaxing evening isn’t on the itinerary, you can take a peek around Atlantis for Justin Bieber, who’s been known to frequent the posh resort, even once with Kim Kardashian!

Pusser’s – Marina Cay, BVI’s

There are few places like Marina Cay. The flower covered, eight-acre island is ringed by a soft, white sand beach. The island is nestled in a sheltered, emerald green, lagoon whose shallow waters are always calm and lukewarm. The island is also home to award winning Pusser’s, the restaurant chain of the Original Navy Rum company, specializing in seafood and cuisine of the Caribbean. The Burger is called the All-American and it’s a half pounder char-grilled and topped with your choice of American, swiss, monterey jack, cheddar, pepper jack or bleu cheese.

With the island location of Pusser’s it is the ideal place for snorkelers to enjoy the colorful fish and sea life that inhabit the coral reef and the lagoon. A frequent visitor to St Barth since 1976, Jimmy has been known to give free impromptu concerts at Le Select over the years.

Le Select is an island institution that is loved by locals and tourists alike.

The resort’s beach bar (with tables directly in the sand), the cheeseburger on their lunch menu is very popular.
